(TGA) - Traveling to WV from Norfolk. Would like to spend part of a day in either Richmond or Charlottesville as I drive to WV. Would you suggest one over the other or even something else along the way? Been to Charlottesville and really liked it, but like to try something new. Thanks for any heads up.

Richmond has many sights and museums for Civil War buffs, as well as the bohemian "Carytown" section near VCU which has unusual and eclectic gift shops and cafes. More big shopping malls have opened near Richmond in recent years, such as "Short Pump" center on the N.W. side. Car racing and horse racing are nearby.
Charlottesville is a sophisticated smaller city and ranked as one of the finest U.S. towns to live in, or retire to, in many surveys. You will find wineries, horse farms, a pedestrian-only central zone, the culture of a university community, and the famous mountaintop home of Jefferson, "Monticello".

Another worthwhile sight is the "Museum of American Frontier Culture" --easy to find, beside the interstate, in Staunton, VA. It's a series of 3 farmsteads representing English, Irish, and German pioneer living. Not sure what seasons it's open, however- check their website.

I would add a hearty recommendation for the frontier culture museum if you have kids; one of the most precious memories I have is watching my daughter chase the chickens and get "scolded" by a colonial-era "farmer" in full costume who fretted that now he wouldn't have enough eggs tomorrow because his hens were upset.
