1st visit to ME - Looking for waterfront cottage 5/29-6/04 › DownEast and Acadia Maine › Bar Harbor

(TGA) - My husband and I will be traveling to BH for the first time 5/29-6/04. We would like to stay in a cottage/condo with a water view. We would like a place with a kitchen and one bedroom is fine. We plan on hiking, exploring ANP, sightseeing, lighthouses, etc. We dont have to be in town but would like to be on the outskirts. Would like to be under $130 a night in a clean place perferably still with amenities like tv and wifi and not too outdated.
Any suggestions? Thank you!!

There are a lot of places, though I would say most are cottages-----not sure there are many condos. I strongly suggest you view the available ones and their price-points on a website such as www.homeway.com. Your price is OK, particularly for lake-view.
As you look at the possibilities, consider that if the listing says something such as "Southwest Harbor Village", you might have the best of both worlds----outside of busy Bar Harbor but still within walking distance of shops and restaurants. If you find a couple of places you like and are not sure about the locations, ask on this forum again and someone familiar with the area can help you.

The basic resource for lodging in this area probably is:
http://www.acadiamagic.com
More specifically for house/cottage rentals:
http://www.vrbo.com
http://www.cyberrentals.com

Might try Edgewater Motel and Cottages
and Emery"s Cottages. Both have cottages
right on Frenchman's Bay in Salisbury Cove.
About 5 miles from BH, I would guess. We have stayed
at both and highly recommend them. Run by
very nice families. We have
no financial or any other interests in either one.
Just customers.

Edgewater is a nice place but the owners suck. Real picky about what you do, where you park, the people you visit and are friends with. Stayed there for 6 years and will not stay there again, to picky and bossy about what you do with your own time after taking your money. Many more nicer places to stay. I am a school teacher of over 25 years and my husband a professional salesman and just can't adjust to this kind of treatment. Have traveled the world over and have never been treated like a kid at the age of 60. We are very reserved and respectful of our neighbors when on vacation. If you can stay elsewhere, do it.

Would not stay at Edgewater. Owners are like dictators. You must be freinds with the right people, park exactly right or you will be frowned upon. I have stayed there for 6 years but no longer because of what they expect from you. They will gladly take your money but give little in return. I am a professional and my wife a school teacher, we have traveled all over the world and have never been treated like we have been treated here. At first we just ignored it but no longer will we tolerate it, to many other nice locations. Try southwest harbor for some scenic ocean views and much nicer host.

I don't dispute your right to express an opinion (although your choice of language is sub-optimal) but I am curious---why did it take you 6 years to come to your conclusion?

Not only that, but why are you posting it on every possible thread?

Payed with a credit card upon check out. Owners never said a word or it was a problem. When I went to book again they stated we were no longer welcome there because we paid with a card instead of a check, this was just the last straw.

It sounds like the owners could have handled the credit card vs. check a bit better. But I hope you understand that it probably wasn't anything against ou personally. Economic times have been hard here in Bar Harbor. There are about six bed and breakfast places on the market this Spring. Depending on the deal one has with a bank, the cottages could have been losing five percent or more by taking a credit card vs. a check. That could have been the tipping point for them

Thanks everyone. We looked at homeaway.com and other places. One place I looked at is windward cottages but not sure if its too out of the way. Also liked edgewater but after the last post not to sure.
I do like the idea of Southwest Harbor. It would be nice to be within walking distance to a town. Thanks so much for all the helpful advice. We booked our plane tickets today so now I def got to find a place to stay!
