(TGA) - Travel - I didnt know there were Amish in Indiana. Apparently there is a whole communtity there. We were told that the Amish were a little more progressive than the Amish in Pennsylvania. We pulled into the campground and got a chance to talk to some of the workers there. They were very nice and such great people to talk to. They wore brighter colors and some of them even used cell phones. They mentioned that on the farm next door they sold fresh brown eggs and had a new foal that day. We decided again..to take a little time and check out the area..we were glad we did. We stopped at the farm next door and asked them if they had eggs for sale. They said they were sorry but they didnt have any today. They were an Amish family and the little girl was soo adorable. The young man spoke with Brian for a few minutes and then mom came out. Come to find out they have 8 children, her husband is a cabinet maker and works out of the barn and they are planning a trip to Yosemite next year. They go by train. The daughter wore a dress made of periwinkle blue and the mother had a green dress
. They were very sweet too and let us see the new foal. When we left...they actually went back inside and brought us out a jar of homeade grape jelly. A gift...it was precious. We left there and went to breakfast...i was itchen for some good cookin we ate a great meal that lasted us until dinner. The Amish folks all wear some sort of head covering, but work in regular diners and businesses. Many of them still ride horses and buggys and many drive cars. Sometimes the horse is pulling a tractor trailer (like a john deer)...now thats real horsepower. There are even ruts on the sides of the roads from the hoofs of the horses. We drove by one area and...they had a one room school house. It must have been break time or something (Brian said he thought they were having school outside) because all of the girls were sitting outside on one side of the schoolhouse and the boys were sitting on the other side.We also noticed that all of the Amish houses were immaculate...Brian and I speculated why..but agreed it was because they didnt spend any time watching tv...or internet. But we also agreed that they probably felt is was for Gods glory.
For our final stop, we went to the Rise and Roll...we were told they have the worlds best donuts...I think i would agree...James would not agree...to him...nothing is better than Dunkin. I walked into the store and there were baked goods everywhere and many samples to try. 1/3 of the store...was...store and the other 2/3rds was an open baking kitchen behind the counters where you could see everything. It was immaculate and there were about 30 Amish young ladies cooking and washing and baking. We picked up some cheese, breads and donuts...yum all around. We then drove and drove....we thought we had a place picked out in Pennsylvania...but as we drove in..the kids started..."mom...dad...this is wierd...do we have to stay....it was creepy and dogs were barking....needless to say...we left" We then found a KOA and had a great nights sleep...we left...late again and decided to take one more detour before hitting . We decided to go to the Charlestown Breechway and watch the sunset at the beach. It seemed like the perfect way to end a coast to coast trip. The only thing i was missing was some clam cakes and chowda. The kids dipped their feet in the Atlantic Ocean and Brian got them all cleaned up with the outside shower (first time we got to use it). We backed into the driveway and got home to find that Deidre and Adriana had....as Brian put it "stole all the dust!" Thanks Deidre for taking such great care of everything...you can watch our house anytime. Thanks everyone else for all of your great comments...we really enjoyed reading them...and we felt like were a little a way and a little at home....thanks Brian for driving so much...i couldnt have done it all...and thanks kids for being so great....good nightAlisa
