Best route from Denver to Black Hills, SD › York

(TGA) - We'll be flying into Denver and then travelling up to South Dakota, before going onto to Cody, Yellowstone and Grand Teton.
My question - what is the most scenic route from Denver to Black Hills, SD? We're probably going to spend a couple of hours in Denver before setting off, so will need an overnight stop - but where? Should we travel up through Nebraska?
Thanks

Hi Carline - I haven't done this trip in years, but I think you'll want to stick to I-25 at least as far north as Cheyenne. Going northeast on 76 is mostly high plains and will take you out of the way by too much. ONthe NE side, check out Scottsbluff. It could be a good overnight spot. Chimney Rock and Courthouse Rock are famous settler landmarks worth seeing. Then you could hook up with 385 and head north. Carhenge is in Alliance- I've never been there, but think Stonehenge, only with cars if you're into goofy tourist sites. Agate Fossil Beds is a little out of the way, but it's an interesting park. Or you could swing back to 85 and take the Wyoming route. We went to Fort Laramie once National Historic Landmark once, And I recall that it was interesting also. Have a great trip.

Here is an awesome route for you. Denver to Cheyenne, Cheyenne to Kimball, Ne., I80, Kimball to Gearing Ne #71, Gearing to Bridgeport, Ne. #92, Bridgeport to Chadron, Ne, and on to Hot Springs SD. #385, Black Hills. You pick your overnight, good accomadations anywhere. This is a fast yet scenic route. From the Black Hills to Cody. Custer SD., to Moorcroft Wy., #16, Moorcroft to Buffalo, # I 90, Buffalo to Worland, # 16, Worland south on #789 to #431, then west on #431 to #120, north on #120 to Cody. This is a stunning drive all the way. Very good roads, and as fast as any other route, but by far the most scenic. The drive over the Big Horns is spectactular and 10 Sleep canyon is beyound words. Highway 120 runs north along the east face of Yellowstone. Hands down, the best route from Denver to Cody thru the Black Hills.
