Car Hire from Zagreb and return › Zagreb

(TGA) - I'm thinking of hiring a car in Zagreb driving over to Osijek, then through Bosnia Herzegovina via Mostar back to the coast from Dubrovnik to Split, or further north, before returning to Zagreb.
Any suggestions on Car Hire companies, approximate costs, and any problems with going from Croatia through BIH and back to Croatia.
Would public transport - Rail and Coach be better?

Any car you hire in Croatia must have special papers to allow you to drive it into BiH. Make sure of that before you reserve it.
Do you have to fly into and out of Zagreb? Can you fly into Zagreb, hire the car and drive on to Dubrovnik, and fly back from there? Alternately, you could save the drive back and fly back to Zagreb. Croatia Airlines flights within the country are not that expensive.
In October I hired a car in Zagreb and drove it on to Dubrovnik.. I reserved the car with Sixt via a US booker called Auto Europe - probably not available to you. You can try Sixt directly but not sure what kind of price you would get. As always, use the travel websites to compare prices and look for other tips for cheap car hire.

Hmm - you're going to be in Croatia and BiH for a month? That might be a long time to hire a car. I guess if you can handle the cost.- fine. Otherwise, you might consider hiring a car for just short periods of time and taking bus, train, or ferry the rest of the way.
I would probably reserve the car at least at the beginning. Mid-June could be busy. I know in October I reserved a car ahead of time and when I arrived I got the LAST car they had. (And luckily for me, it had papers to go into BiH because I had forgotten to request that! Because there were no other cars, I had little choice but to take that one.)

The rates definitey include travel to Bosnia since like I have said earlier most companies have that included. Companies use to charge that in the past but due to the number of them which have stopped to do that simple in order to stay competitive most of the do not charge travels to neghbouring countries, even though some of them charge entry to Serbia.
Regarding the booking, it is a must to book a car earlier since the price will be much lower than directly at the counter, if any available.
Furthermore regarding the costs, it is much cheaper to take the buses and trains of course, no doubt, but since you have asked for car rental now you have all the info you need.

Thanks for your help with this but I'm thinking of car rental because I have looked on the net and people say that Bus and Train travel is expensive in Croatia. They also comment that sometimes you cannot get tickets or when you do get a ticket you have to stand. In addition there are comments about paying extra for your luggage as well.
Looking at the price of hiring a car it works out to about 50 euro or less a day so with tolls, fuel costs etc for the two of us that would be about 25 euro each a day.
Are the comments about the expense of bus travel and the problems with getting a bus correct?

A bus ticket from Zagreb to Dubrovnik would be app. 40 Euros. You would not have to stand but the rides lasts for 11-12 hours. With the cars the ride would maybe a little less but you have to decide what you like.
Regarding the price of the car, I think if you rent a car for a longer period of time
I think you would definitely pay less for per day for a smaller vehicle.

I can't speak for rail prices as i've never used the train in Croatia but i've never thought the bus prices to be expensive, quite the opposite in fact.

Thanks for that. In that case I might do Bus travel with a little bit of car hire to get to places where buses don't go.

hi,
a nice car hire is decodecarhire.co.uk . They have pick-up points in Zagreb, Split and Dubrovnik, as far as I remember. And in airports as well. You can find approximate fares at the start page (average 15-20 euro per day).
Bus transportation is good, too. But it is better to travel on your own to see more (my opinion)
