(TGA) - I am flying into Dubrovnik Airport with family in September and intending to travel south to Montenegro - Kotor and Budva. I am not sure if you can easily hire a car in Croatia and drive it across the border into Montenegro, or equally, would it be cheaper to bus it to Montenegro and hire a car there for a few days. I welcome any thoughts/ previous experiences from anyone.

we have just returned from croatia/ montenegro we hired a car and in croatia and crossed the border into montenegro - slight queue at the border but not too bad - most car hire companies allow you to take thier cars over - some include it in the price - others charge a few euros a day - i think having the car gives you more freedom and the driving in montenego is certainly different
if you want i can provide you with details of company we used and a contact who was very helpful inside the company

Thanks for the message. I was in Croatia in 2006 and I know some car hire companies are reluctant to hire you a car if you are driving across borders into other Balkan countries. I have also read that Croatian reg cars can be subject to minor vandalism in Montenegro.

Hi there,
We are also planning a holiday in Montenegro and were wondering if you knew the exact cost of car hire for a week, and if you had contact details from a hire company?
Thanks.

Hi,
On my previous trip to Croatia, I can't remember the hire company but it had a desk at Split Airport. Not on e of the big global companies. Car hire in this region is more expensive than Ireland/UK, with the cost around 80 euros per day for a compact sized car. I think the insurance greatly increased the cost, but then, there is a greater risk of accidents on the roads in this region.
Some people have recommended the company below, but I have had no experience personally of them.
Regards

Hi,
I'm about to do a similar thing myself, but I will be going to Kolasin first then down to Kotor. I started a similar thread on the Dubrovnik forum, there is some extra advice on there too.
I trawled the net for hours looking for the best deal on car rental, because it is expensive. I managed to get a great deal from a company called CITROX. It was £155 for 9 days for a 'mini' class. This was so much cheaper than the competitors I upgraded to 'economy' class and it was still cheap (£177) than the others 'mini'.
You can also hire sat-nav if you're worried about getting lost, but I hear it is pretty easy to find your way around.

I've just returned from Kotor, crossing the border from Croatia was easy. Managed to get a really decent pretty new car with air con for £160 for 8 days from Sixt car hire. They were good and didn't charge any more for crossing the border. I'd recommend them and would definately use them again.

Hi - We are planning the same trip and have found that Holidayautos (they are part of lastminute.com so if you go onto that website you can click onto there via a link for hire cars) are offering 7 days car hire for £99.
You can collect from Dubrovnik airport and no problems driving into Montenegro. This was the best deal I found.
Hope you have a great time.

We're hiring a car from Dubrovnik Airport to drive into Montenegro. Taking the advice of a previous reply and using Sixt Hire they seem to be best value and no border charge. One question - is it recommended to take out the extra insurance in case of damage to the car? I have heard that there can some times be key scrapping etc to Croatian plated cars? Has anyone had this problem?

We are flying into Dubrovnik in June next year and intend hiring a car to drive down to Montenegro. I would be very interested in receiving your car hire details. Also can you tell me, did you need an international drivers licence?
