(TGA) - I wish to rent a car for two people in Munich and travel through Bavaria, Salzberg and into the Czech republic, returning the car in Prague. This would allow seeing the countryside and stopping at a couple places in the Czech Republic. There seems to have very expensive drop off charge however. Avis wants to charge nearly $10,000, if you can believe that.
Has anyone done this and found a reasonable deal?

You will always pay a large premium to do this - the hire company will have to pay someone to drive the car back to Germany as people hiring in Prague don't usually want a German registered car.
your best plan might be to change your trip to finsh back in Germany, maybe in Dresden or Nuremburg.
You also need to tell the hire company that you plan to drive to Austria and the Czech Republic as they will have restrictions on the types of cars allowed.

For a quality car such as bmw/merc etc then you will more or less not be able to take it in to czech. Eastern europeans like stealing these cars so if youre seeking a bargain luxury car try romania or poland- Rent a Ford from a local rental company (not large multinational) and you will be fine BUT you wont be able to drop it off in czech. In a nutshell renting in germany and dropping off in czech is a silly idea. Go by train. Or buy a 10 year old 7 series beamer, enjoy the v8 or v12 then leave it in prague and it will disappear by itself.

Unless you have to fly out of Prague then find a way to return to Germany.
As mentioned above you will have to tell the hire car company which countries you are visiting.
Avis don't allow any cars to be taken to the old eastern bloc countries, Hertz and Sixt don't allow any German cars (Audi, Bmw etc), Jeeps or 4x4. Some Mercedes/BMW models are also not allowed to be taken to Italy.
It would also be a good idea to ask if you need a "beglaubigte Genehmigung der Kfz-Zulassungsstelle"
This is basically a certificate that prooves you have permission to have the vehicle
You should ensure that your Hotel in Prague has secure parking (I always drive to Prague and therefore always ensure my Hotel has a secure garage)
