Latvia to shut down nightclubs

There are currently eight nightclubs that may be shut down

RIGA-In an effort to stem fraudulent nightclub behavior, President Valdis Zatlers along with various ministers and police chiefs have pledge to develop a plan within two weeks allowing the closing of clubs.

The government also plans to introduce stricter regulations and new legislation for clubs and bars.

According to Interior Minister Linda Murniece, there are eight clubs in downtown Riga that could be closed. The minister added that closing down these clubs will also serve as a warning to other entertainment venues looking to swindle tourists.

Sandra Kukule, adviser to the president in legal matters, told that the current situation regarding the clubs that swindle tourists is puzzling.

“Everyone is aware of clubs in question, yet not enough is being done to solve the problem,” said Kukule.

This vigorous action comes as a response to an increase in fraud and in some cases, violent crime involving tourists and nightclubs. President Zatlers organized the meeting with officials to help solve this problem as he stated his concern regarding Latvia’s image abroad.

Several foreign embassies have released warnings to tourists regarding scams. The Embassy of the United Kingdom has also distributed pamphlets with information to keep tourists safe. The Embassy of the United States has also released a list of clubs and bars that have been places of crime or fraud.

Among the bars listed by the U.S. Embassy as places to avoid are:

These clubs will be reopened somewhere else,and with the diferent names.

Rip off culture in Riga will never die!!!!!

There is a rob & grab situations everywhere you turn around in riga. Includes taxis,hotels,bars,clubs,doctors,police,regular people etc..

“Lord’s Pub” is closed by State Revenue Service.

Lord's pub is now called 'Royal' - don't know if it changed names before or after the closure, it was closed now at least. And as I predicted Labyrinth also changed its name, it's now called 'Enigma'.

Maybe there should be a sticky warning thread on this forum, the mob seems to change the names of their bars quite often..
