Currency Exchange › Kiev

(TGA) - I have quite a large amount of Belarus roubles. Will it be possible to exchange these for Ukrainian currency?

If so, where would I go to make this exchange.

Hi there!

I’m afraid there are not so many exchange bureaus in Kyiv that would accept BYR. Theoretically, those in the entry ports – Central Railway Station (1 Vokzalna Sq) and Boryspil Airport should be fine with taking Belarus roubles.

Note though, that if the amount of currency transaction (no matter which currency) exceeds UAH 15 000 (in equivalent), you can only carry out this transaction through the bank (or approach several bureaus with smaller amounts or the same bureau, but in several days).

Identification of customers is required by Law for transactions over UAH 15 000 (in equivalent), so you should be asked to show your passport or other ID. For transactions of up to UAH 50,000 (in equivalent) only the name is registered, for the larger ones – name, date of birth, ID details, citizenship and residence.

Also, note that you will not be able to make currency conversion, i.e. sell BYR for USD, EUR or any currency other than hryvnya. If you don’t need hryvnya for your roubles, you can only sell your roubles for hryvnya and then buy any other currency for hryvnya. Bid and offer exchange rates (i.e. buying and selling rates) differ on cash market.

If you don’t succeed with the bureaus at the Railway Station or Boryspil, try the following banking institutions:

UKREXIMBANK (State Export-Import Bank of Ukraine) that deals with ample different currencies, located on 127 Gorkogo Str. or its Kyiv branch on 11B (ukr. 11-Б) Vorovskogo Str.

PRIVATBANK, the largest Ukrainian bank, Kyiv regional office located 41 B.Khmelnitskiy Str.

VTB UKRAINE (subsidiary of Russia’s Vneshtorgbank), Kyiv regional office located 35 Zhylyanska Str.; Central branch located 7/11 Khreshchatyk Str. or Pushkinska branch located 8/26 Shevchenka Ave/Pushkinska Str.

FYI official ex-rate established by the National Bank of Ukraine for today is 1000BYR = 2.9UAH. Commercial rates may differ from this benchmark.
