Driving from Santa Rosa CA through OR up to (Shoreline) WA › Portland

(TGA) - Hi!
We are planning a trip Aug 27th-Sept.10th We will be spending the first 5 nights with friends in Santa Rosa. Then we are renting a car and driving through Oregon up to Shoreline Washington where we have friends. But once there plan probably just spending a night with them then getting out to see what we can for the rest of the week.
We have no real schedule yet. Just looking for ideas on places to stop on our way through OR. We will also have our 5 month old with us. Not sure how long to take for the drive compared to time spent in WA?
Any suggestions? I hear the coast drive through OR is amazing but if we take say 3 nights for the drive through OR what is best to check out. Maybe stop for day hikes and where to stay over. Then that would leave us 5 days in WA......
I am sure there are a million options so any ideas are welcome. We like the outdoors and scenic drives, also my husband is from Switzerland so any chance to see the Ocean is always nice for him.
Thanks! Looking forward to hearing your suggestions.
Carlotta

The coastal highway north from San Francisco area is one of the prettiest in the US. You'd first be on Highway 1, which is very scenic but very slow, especially in summer, because it is a two lane winding road. Hwy 1 ends into Hwy 101 at Leggett, Calif, then 101 continues all the way to . . . well, actually all the way to Lund, British Columbia. You won't be going quite that far :-)
There is also Hwy 101 north from Santa Rosa, which is a pleasant drive and much faster than Hwy 1. If you take Hwy 101, it is about 4.5 hours drive to Eureka. If you take Hwy 1, you'll need to add at least 2-3 hours to that. The lovely redwood country starts around there, and extends along Hwy 101 for about 100 miles or so, to Crescent City.
There are some great hikes through the redwoods, here's one, http://redwoods.info/showrecord.asp?id=476

Continuing north, another nice stop would be either Yachats, Oregon. Perhaps spend a third night around Manzanita, south of Cannon Beach. Astoria is an interesting town but it's on the river not ocean, but you might like seeing the big ships.
You'll be bumping into our Labor Day holiday, Sept 4,5,6. *Everything* is very busy that weekend, as it is the traditional end to summer. Book well ahead!
