From Prague to Romania › Bohemia › Prague

(TGA) - We have three weeks in May again and are thinking of Flying to Prague and then travelling by train to Romania. We spent three weeks in Romania last year and very much want to return to visit Timosoara and upwards to Sigheti area. Have only just started to research and need to book flights asap. Planning our route in Romania is not too difficult and expect to spend ten to fourteen days there.
My urgent question and starting point for planning is the train route and length of journey fom Prague to Romania. How many routes are there for entry to Romania travelling from Prague ? and any choice of route.? And is this do-able.?
We have not decided whether to do the return journey to England from Bucharest or Budapest. Both are a possibility. Depending on cost and timing.
We look forward to ideas and of course all plans are loose at present should inspiration require it.
Thanking you in anticipation.

There is a night train form Budapest (19:13) to Bucharest (10:34 next morning), that can be reached by the daily from Prague (11:39).

Thnx sir_humphrey for your prompt reply. I sent a full message to you earlier but it seems to have got lost somewhere.
Your info with regards the train to Budapest is just what we needed.
Now let the adventure begin..
Just to confirm . There is a train from Prague to Budapest at 11.39 everyday incl. sat and sunday May 2010
Do you know the length of the journey into Budapest?
We travelled on the night train to Brasov in 2006. Does the train from Prague go to the same railway station?
Now we can identify Prague as our starting point we can now plan and wonder if you can suggest any must visit places en-route to Budapest.
Our interests are local and world history, art and architecture, transport ,religion. We like to stay in Local hotels/pensions and meet and eat with local people.etc...
We will probably enter Romania via Arad ,Oradea or Timosoara unless we find there is a train that takes us up near Ukraine border.
Nevertheless Prague will be the start of our journey and we can book a flight
today. Thnx.

It's a big old journey (20 + hours) - from Prague to Budapest it costs from €19 https://eshop.cd.cz/international/info.aspx… and from Budapest it costs from €29 for a seat to Bucharest, €39 for a couchette - you could probably buy that ticket in Prague, otherwise in Budapest. If you are only going to Timisoara, though, it is €27 from Budapest for a 4-day return (I think it is the same for a single, but I may be wrong), and the number of those tickets is unlimited - buy in Budapest. There are a couple of daily direct trains - see www.idos.cz for more info on train times.
Also this has good information http://europetrainsguide.com/
Between Prague and Budapest there is Brno, of course http://www2.brno.cz/index.php?lan=en - the finest city in the Czech Republic.

You can check this link....

Depends where you want to go first from Budapesta (can be either Timisoara, Arad, Cluj, Brasov or Bucharest)..If you want to fly back from Bucharest, you can check some low-cost companies flying from BBU, as wizzair or blue air...I guess both companies have flights to London (Luton i think) also from Cluj or Timisoara..Sometimes, you can have low-priced tickets also for Malev flights to Gatwick, via Budapest, either from Bucharest or Cluj.

Hi GCEK
We booked our flights yesterday.
We fly into Prague on Sunday. We have both been to Prague before so will possibly stay 2 nights to do the bit we have missed and then start the train journey toward Hungary/Romania.
We hope to identify places to visit en route through Czech Rep. and hopefully we will be able to get on and off the train?
We have passes that will allow this but do we need to make advance reservation? and will this be possible do you think??
We have decided to fly out of BUDAPEST on the Saturday (3 weeks later)
Ihave mislaid my rail map but wonder if it is possible to enter Romania taking a different route and missing out Budapest. On this trip we want to visit the area around Baia Mare (near to Ukraine/Hungary border) and then go to Budapest from Timosoara.
Is there atrain from Bratislava I wonder.
I probably need to go into another forum for this info but if you do have any suggestions on stop-overs etc it would be good to know.
We always like to do the unexpected.
Thnx.

Thanx Neamtzu
The start and end of our trip is Into Prague and out of Budapest. We would prefer to enter Romania from somewhere other than Budapest as we dont really want to go there twice in one holiday unless absolutely necessary.
The air flight prices (open-jaw) were better using Budapest for exit. This has given us the base of our trip. But we really do want to get to Viseu de Sus for the logging train and also then get down to Timosoara before going to BUDAPEST . Any ideas??
