(TGA) - I am planning to visit Greece in June 2010 for a week. After that I definitely want to go to Macedonia, since I've been told it is very nice place to see, but I can not figure out how to get there from Athens. Any hints?

Oh Tony! You are now opening a can of worms. . .
Do you want to Macedonia or Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia?
Confused? not knowing what i am talking about?
Brief explanation: Macedonia is a wide geogprahical term / area in the Balkans, incuding land now in 3 different countries. Larger part of it, around 50% is a Greek territory. A big part of it around 30% is what is today called FYROM or Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, a different country and member of UN under this provisional name. A smaller part of it around 20% is in Bulgaria.

So, if you ask in Northern Greece "i want to go to Macedonia" the response you 'll receive will be "but you are alredy there". If you say "but i want to go to the country named Macedonia" the kindest and quite justified response you 'll have will be a raised eyebrow.
Confused? you can read more here:

Thinking that this is a bit too much for 21st century? May be it is, may be it is not. All Greece is asking is that they add a geographical acronym in their constitutional name like "North" or "Northern" and remove all reference in their Constitution saying all geographical area of Macedonia should be united under their border.
Please do use the United Nations name for our Northern neighbours, which is Former Yogoslav Republic of Macedonia.

Hey and welcome Tony_Bartow:-) Never figured on getting an education here as well..lol?;-) Nonetheless, if you are in fact referring to Greece's Northern part of the Country w/it's capital at Thessaloniki..it's a quick approx 30 min flight from Athens..check www.olympicair.gr/ www.aegenairlines.com/ You can can also take a train up North..the new 'express' ones take about 4 hours..as oppossed to longer/local runs that can take upwards of 7 hours! This area is indeed a VERY nice place to see and visit...Enjoy!
