(TGA) - My family and I are headed to Yankee Stadium on Thursday for the 2nd game of the World Series. We're coming from Northeast Pennsylvania and at first, thought we would drive in. However, more and more, I'm hearing that it's a very bad idea. We're most comfortable driving but will take public transportation if that's the best way to go. Can anyone offer suggestions for the best, safest route? Should we drive to Newark and take the train into the city? Only one person in our group has ever ridden the subway but none of the other 3 have. Ages range from 10 -62. Any help is appreciated - thanks.

Once you get into the city, you would take either the 4 train or the B or D. You could also take a Metro-North train, but that's probably not that helpful to you.
Here's a link with mass Transit info: …mlb.com/nyy/ballpark/mass_transit.jsp
Where exactly in North Eastern PA are you? Can you take an Amtrak train into Penn Station? A New Jersey Transit train? A PATH train?
Oh, and driving to the stadium is DEFINITELY not something you want to do. So give us some more info and we'll get you exact directions. And yes, the subway is very safe, and is a great fun way to get to and from a game. Of course, I'm assuming you're Phillies fans (stinkers!) but we'll treat you nicely anyway. :)

We're coming from Pottsville, PA - 90 miles north of Philly (and abt. 45 miles north/west of Allentown) and by the way . . . LIFETIME YANKEES FANS!!!!!! No Amtrak train near us. We would have to drive to the train. Thanks for your help.

Ah, I see. Well, first of all, mazel tov on being Yankees fans, and mazel tov again on getting series tickets. I'm jealous. :)
Your question has intrigued me. Driving (and parking) in Newark isn't a treat either, and I'm starting to wonder whether it wouldn't be better for you to drive up 81 to 84 and come down on a Metro North train instead of coming across either 78 or 80 and taking a NJTransit train to the subway. That way you only have to take one train instead of several. Let me work on this for a bit; and if we're lucky, Aerules, who is our Newe Jersey expert, will weigh in on the New Jersey train options.
Are you driving back home after the game, or are you staying overnight somewhere? It'll be a long drive late at night.

Driving home after the game. You're right - a long ride but so worth it to see the Yanks in the World Series - my dream come true. Thanks for your help.

All right, here is my suggestion.
The link below is the World Series Game Day train schedules to and from Yankee Stadium on the Hudson Line or Metro-North. If you look at the schedule, you will see why I suggest that you drive to and take the train from Croton-Harmon station. The express trains will only take about 30 minutes to and from the stadium. It should be about a three hour drive from you: I suggest you take 81/84 and NOT 78/287. I think you'll avoid more traffic that way, since you'll be going in the opposite direction from rush hour.

Croton-Harmon does have a parking lot, but I have no first hand knowledge of whether parking in that lot is easy. Maybe someone else can weigh in. The link below is the station information for Croton-Harmon station itself.

Lastly, the www.mta.info site has lots of additional infomration about Metro-North schedules, fares and stations.
Good luck, and Go Yankees!

Thanks so much for your help and for the great information, Brooklyn. I'll check out the info and compare schedules, etc. and take it from there. I hadn't considered this option but it might make more sense.
Go Yankees!!

Yeah, it's a longer drive than to Newark or Elizabeth, but you'll only have to deal with one train instead of two; if you get an express there won't be any stops between where you get on and where you get off; and I think in the end it'll take you less time and be a more pleasant experience. If you drive to Newark, it's a NJTransit train to a subway to another subway. Plus, in case I hadn't mentioned it, driving in Newark is not something I would do for fun. :)
Enjoy your trip, and I hope whatever way you get here, you have a great time!

Brooklyn Bridge driving and parking in Newark is just as bad if not worse than driving and parking in Manhattan. I wrote a guide with how to get to both stadiums for the world series on the nj fourm FAQ.

I'm pretty sure that's what I just said, Aerules.

My bad. I was reading from the side while posting a reply.
