(TGA) - Hello,
I was wondering if any difficulties are likely to present themselves with langauage in Estonia especially in the countryside e.g. Hiuma and Kihnu?
I have English and Russian but I understand there are certain taboos on the use of the Russian language.
Thanjk you!
Juan

There are no much taboos about foreign languages:
Older and middle age people speaks mainly Russian too. 90-95% of people have no problem to communicate in Russian if they know the language.
Younger generation speaks quite good English...
Of course the smaller the place is there is bigger change not to find many foreign language speakers. but the rule is also, that the smaller the place the more friendly people living there and they have lot of tiem and are interested to communicate. So they know people who can speaks some foreign language and go to look for them...

Communication isn't a huge problem in the places foreigners usually go. You may have some difficulty in some out-of-the-way village cafés, but even there people will communicate with you any way they can. As Mr Bike says, older folks speak Russian and most people under 30 have at least some English. They will not object to your Russian but I would try English first, particularly with younger people.
The Russian-speaking minority will appreciate your efforts in their language, although there aren't many of them on the islands you mention,
