Most scenic beaches north of San Francisco › Los Angeles

(TGA) - We are planning a trip up the coast of California starting in San Francisco. What are the most scenic places along the coast to Oregon. We will also be travelling to Oregon north to Coos Bay, then to Crater Lake and then Portland. Any suggestions on what "not to miss" on this trip!

Well, in all honesty, pretty much everything is scenic north of San Francisco :-)
The important thing is to allow enough *time* to enjoy it all. How much time do you have for your trip?
What time of year are you visiting? Crater Lake gets many feet of snow each year (40 feet or more) , so the north entrance and rim road does not open until late June usually.
For more specific Oregon info, start a thread here:
.its fun to be there. There are places to stay in town or we have stayed at Ship Ashore with room facing the Smith River outlet to the ocean.

Its about a 10 minute drive back to Crescent City.
Both Crescent City and Eureka are mid size towns for Northern California. I'd probably stay in Crescent City as I like the area better. Good swimming at Jedidiah Smith State Park, which is nine miles east of Crescent City.

Hi LouisianaConnie
I agree with mini stay in Ft Bragg and Crescent City, Eureka is a zoo on the 4th. The drive from Ft Bragg to Crescent City will be a long day, Plan a stop in Trinidad for lunch and a walk on the beach.
Have Fun

Here is some info about Crescent City.
Crescent City is sort of like the late Rodney Dangerfield – " it don't get no respect"!
Crescent City as a destination is rarely on tourists' agendas, because if all you do is drive through on Hwy 101, you see an older, more working class somewhat congested town.
But it has a lovely side to it too, with some interesting sights:
Battery Point lighthouse - access is across a causeway accessible only at low tide. The only lighthouse on the west coast like this. Very cute.
Point St George - a gorgeous open walking area along the bluffs above the sea.
Howland Hill Road - an awesome drive through the redwoods on a gravel road, about 6 miles. You are close enough to touch them from your car window! Several places to park and wander through the giant trees.
The B Street Pier - near the lighthouse, this is a lovely walk out on a pier by the jetty. Even in summer, the waves come rolling in and crash on the rocks.
The beach - a long crescent shape (hence the name) where the driftwood logs usually outnumber the people. One side is ocean, the other is hills covered with redwood trees.
Brother Jonathan cemetery - an historic cemetery for victims of an 1865 shipwreck.
Marina - a great place to have a walk, and you can get quite close to the sea lions there. It's still a working harbour and is quite picturesque.
Some interesting points along the way: Trinidad is a picturesque little town with a pretty little harbour. About 6-10 miles south of the town of Orick is Stone Lagoon, and you'll be sure to see elk all over around there, as they claim the "world's largest" elk herd lives there! Orick itself is an interesting little town with many woodcarvers. Do take the Newton B Drury scenic route. This is old highway 101 and it will loop you back to the current 101 just south of Klamath.
Here are some helpful websites. The first one covers a driving tour north from the Eureka area:
