(TGA) - I am a 23 year old graduate of Purdue University and I will be moving to Delaware this spring to be with my husband who is with the US Air Force. He will be working in Dover and we will have to find a place to live over a week's visit while I have a break from school over christmas. I'm really stressed out and nervous about finding an apartment to rent in just five or six days. Is Dover a good place to start looking or are there surrounding cities that are a better chance of having apartments/jobs/active community? I will have my bachelor's degree in speech science and will probably need to either work in a school or hospital.
Thanks for all the help in advance. I don't even know where to begin.

Hello,
You might want to try: city-data.com and then click on Delaware and then post your question there. It is a VERY active state board. We are looking to move there also in a year or two (although we are retired and have different needs, although we do want to be near Dover AFB also). Check out that website - lots of info and input. Good luck.

Dover is a small ciy. Like almost any city there are a few not so good neighborhoods. Look at where you are interested in renting and ask questions . AS you know Dover is home to a large AirBase. You will have many neighbors who are military families.
I believe Milford would be the next closest city. Both cities have hospitals and of course there are many school districts in the area. If you stay at a hotel in the area while you are looking you could most likely get a lot of info by striking up a conversation with the front desk night shift or overnight on late week nights. Business is slow and they might be glad to chat.

The great thing about Delaware is that you can be nearly anywhere in the state and still be within an hour's drive from DAFB. So it comes down to what your employment needs are and how far you are willing to travel. Dover has many apartment complexes and a healthy rental market; I'd be reasonably confident that you can find what you need. Start with internet searches. If you are concerned about crime statistics, you can contact the Dover Police Department (302.736.7111) and ask to speak with the Public Information Officer... he/she can give you that information. When you get to town, obviously you want to check out the places on your 'short list' at different times of the day to get a feel for the neighborhood. Good luck, and welcome to Delaware!

Dover is the largest "city" in Kent County so it would be your best bet for a short commute and finding a decent neigborhood (as others have mentioned it has some rough areas but other areas are fine).
With that said, there will likely be more job opportunities in northern Delaware than central or southern Delaware (however, the quality of life if better in southern / central Delaware if you prefer a more rural setting). In addition to just Dover, you could look into communities north of Dover (such as Smyrna, Middletown or Odessa) that would allow you to commute to north to work in the Newark / Wilmington area and your husband south to Dover.
