Need some input on where to stay › North Carolina Mountains

(TGA) - Hello!

My husband and I are planning a trip to NC the week after Christmas and I'm hoping that someone can give me some insight on where I should begin looking for a cabin. We will be driving to NC from Nashville, TN on our way back home to Florida and plan to stay in NC for 4 days or so. I've been doing some research, but am feeling overwhelmed. We're a mid-30's couple who's looking for someplace that's quiet and reasonably priced with mountain views and some nice day hikes while not being so far out that we can't drive somewhere in the evening to grab a beer and a bite to eat if we decide that we want to venture out...I would love some input from others that know the area well. Thanks!

I suggest the Murphy NC area. You get cabins much cheaper here than in the Asheville area. It is a nice town with many places to eat. Hiking is great within an hours drive. Short drive to I-75 for your trip back to Florida.

Check out cabins here.

We have stayed at #34,094 many times. It is very quiet and has a great view. It is cheaper than a hotel room. Great location also.

Why come to NC - everything you described that you want is in Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area.

Note that if you plan to enter NC, I-40 will be closed for several weeks to months due to a rockslide at the TN/NC border.

Brad: Thanks for the heads-up. We'll be sure to avoid that area during our travels!

Bud: I always think of those areas as being rather "touristy". Am I mistaken? I'm familiar with Memphis and Nashville since I've got family there, but have never visited the areas that you mentioned.

A little east of Bryson City, there is a great little motel called Lloyd's on the River. The rooms have microwaves and fridges; there is a porch stretching all the way across the building in the back just a few yards from a peaceful river. Lloyd's is on the old highway, which parallels the newer 4-lane and is very quiet and peaceful. You're only a short drive from the Deep Creek section of the national park, with many hiking trails. I found Lloyd's when looking for a cabin; though it isn't a cabin and you don't see mountain peaks from the motel, it is wonderfully peaceful with nice rooms at a moderate price.

I can highly recommend this place:

Buffalo Tavern Bed & Breakfast

West Jefferson, NC

It's listed on Hotels.com

We stayed there multiple times with the previous owner, and from reports I've seen it has only gotten better.

Wonderful rooms in a quiet setting, but just a very few minutes into town. It'd be great for a short stay...
