Oct 13 - 17 - Too late for White Mountain foliage? › White Mountains

(TGA) - I'm planning a last-minute foliage trip and deciding between NH and VT, and before you panic, I've already found lodging with vacancies in the areas I'm interested in. The question is where to go.

I've never been to Vermont, so part of me says to go there, but I fell in love with the White Mountains when vacationing in Lincoln in the summers of 07 and 08, and I'd love to see the foliage there while doing some hiking.

My concern is that foliage monitoring sites like Foliage Network and Yankee Foliage seem to indicate that the White Mountain area may have already peaked and next week will be too late. Can anybody in NH comment with firsthand reports and suggestions for what would or would not be worthwhile for next week?

Thanks in advance!

While I am not in the White Mtns, the leaves here in the Capital Region are almost at peak, and the rain and heavy winds haven't been helping much. If I were you I would stick with the southern tier and visit the Monadnock region.

you might miss, it. We were up there last week 10-1 thru 10-4 and most of it was peak, especially on the Kanc Highway., and now with all this wind, I hope its still there for you.

Just returned from our trip to New England and were in the White Mts. Oct. 3-6. The leaves were at their peak and absolutely beautiful. Leaves also were beautiful in northern Maine around Bar Harbor and Camden but as we went further south not so much color.

Could be the reason you have found vacancies in the White Mts. is because foliage is past peak, but that doesn't mean you can't still go and enjoy some fine hiking. You might look to northwestern corner of Mass or southern areas of New Hampshire and Vermont. There is good hiking in all those areas.

I would say its way past peak. The trees are starting to look bare due to last weeks heavy rain, and winds. Additionally, people up in the mountains woke up to 3" of snow this morning.

Was in New Hampshire and did the COG Railroad up the mountain. Stayed in Jackson and went into North Conway. I thought the leaves in the Mount Washington area were beautiful and at their peak
