Oregon Coast trip mid July › Oregon Coast

(TGA) - Travel - My husband and I are planning a 10 day trip from
Montana, with a couple of days around Mt. St. Helens, and the rest of the time down the Oregon coast and maybe into Northern California if we have time. We are planning on camping out of our truck/topper with a few motel stays. We do want to visit Shore Acres Park(Coos Bay), Crater Lake, and Lava Beds National Monument (if we have time). We like to hike, visits gardens and geological areas of interests. We would appreciate advice on campgrounds (smaller preferred), things we should not miss, and places we might want to stay in a motel over camping. We are also trying to decide if we should bring our kayaks(lake, not ocean or river). We look forward to everyone's wonderful recommendations! Thank you!

As far as camping, you can check the Oregon State Parks website. Reservations are a must well ahead of time for most SP campgrounds, though, and there is only one that is directly on the ocean.
Private campgrounds do not require reservations as far ahead, but will be busy in July, especially on weekends.
There are lots of motels along the coast, ranging from luxurious oceanfront hotels to older, small mom-and-pop places that are in town. The oceanfront lodging books up far ahead, but the small motels usually are fine to just walk-in without reservations.
Here are some private campgrounds you might be interested in, from north to south:
Cannon Beach – creek front – gravel/grass RV park, tents ok, full hookups. No big rigs. Beach access ¼ mile

There are many more campgrounds and RV parks - I just picked some out that I'm guessing might appeal to you, and that are oceanfront or nearby :-)
Here is the State Park website... www.oregon.gov/OPRD/PARKS/camping.shtml
Near Crater Lake, look at Diamond Lake - there is a full hookup rustic RV park (Diamond Lake RV Resort) and a no hookup campground right on the lake. Crater Lake is about 15/20 minutes away from Diamond Lake.

Thanks half-Brit. I always appreciate your advice. We are finding that quite a few of the campgrounds are already full for July. Is there one area that you think it would be worth to spend a little more time at? Places that we are thinking of are Manzanita, Yachats/Cape Perpetua/Siuslaw National Forest, Sunset Bay/Shores Bay State Parks, and Brookings.
