(TGA) - We will be in Berlin for 2 weeks this July but would like to spend one night in Poland. Can anyone suggest a town/city in Poland within a 2 hour rail journey from Berlin that would give a flavour of the real Poland?

I don't think such a place exists. The Polish border is 1,5 to 2 hours away with a car (probably more by rail), so you can in fact only see the border towns. The easiest to get to is Słubice, but I am not so sure it is such an exciting town. There are daily taxi rides (you share it with others, like a gypsy taxi) to Stettin, which is supposed to be more interesting (but I honestly don't know).

I used to drive to Slubice which is an hour away and go to their outdoor market and for a nice wholesome plate of Polish food! The pubs are decent too!

Is Szczecin worth visiting?

Hi, you could try Kostrzyn which is about 1 hour and 15 minutes from Berlin Lichtenberg by train and cost about 15 to 20 euros for the return journey. The town was German until the end of WW2 when the old damaged town was abandoned and the present town built by the Poles. The part of Kostrzyn closest to the border is popular with day trippers from German and a large market has sprung up. The town is not stunning but it is typically Polish.

I think Szczecin is the best bet if you don't plan to travel for more than two hours each way. It's bigger than most bordering towns and you will find enough interesting places.

Hi,
You can consider Poznan as well.
There is a direct train and journey takes 2:45 hrs.
In comparison with Szczecin abt 50 minutes more.

Hi :)
I'll strongly recomend Poznan!!! Its easy to go there ( I think trains from Berlin Ostbanhof) and the city is stunning! Go to see the old town and old square market with the town hall built in XVI century. There are many many fantastic restaurants and pubs with delicious food :))
It is worth to stay for 2 nigths and go to Kornik or Rogalin - beautiful palast residences with admirable parks :)) (ca 20 km from Poznan)
