planning ahead › Las Vegas

(TGA) - My husband and I are planning our 2nd fall foliage trip and need some help. We are planning to stay 3 nights in Bar Harbor, Maine, and 2 nights in Woodstock, Vermont. We will be driving from Maine to VT and are looking for a place to stay one night. Any suggestions of a town in Maine, NH, or VT that would be different than the places we are already staying at? Any advice would be much appreciated!

If you are driving from Maine to Vermont, my obvious choice would be one night in New Hampshire. I see you posted this also in the Vermont forum as well as the Maine forum. North Conway is a very popular destination for leaf peepers with lots of lodging choices from independently run motels to B&Bs to large national chain hotels. My personal recommendation is the Golden Gables Inn in North Conway.

No matter where you choose, book early!

Depending on your style of accommodations, the route you will be driving and the time of fall, here's a few great places in NH

Great Northern Moose Lodge in Dummer located in the north country

The village of Jackson just north of Conway has many types of lodging and offers a small town NH feel close to but away from the traffic on rt 16 in Conway. A great b&b is

The Carter Notch Inn as well as Christmas Farm Inn, Eagle Mtn House, Snowflake Inn, Wildcat Inn, Inn at Jackson

If you take a more southerly route through NH there is the Little River B&B in Peterborough

Also depending on the day of the week, some places may have a 2 night minimum so do call ahead.

Dav's suggestions certainly fit your needs.

Looking at a Map you have a long coastal drive before heading West to Woodstock if you want the shortest driving time. So, you have all the towns like Portland, Kennebunkport, Portsmouth (NH) as midway points.

If you drive as the crow flies thru NC, it actually adds an hour+ to your drive. That said, you could choose any of the towns listed here or a town along Lake Winni as you said you were looking for something different.

Thanks all for your suggestions and for responding so quickly. It gives me a good starting point. I think I will research Jackson a little more. That seems to be a popular option but less crowded than North Conway. Thanks again!
