planning early › New Orleans

(TGA) - My husband and I are planning our 2nd fall foliage trip and need some help. We are planning to stay 3 nights in Bar Harbor, Maine, and 2 nights in Woodstock, Vermont. We will be driving from Maine to VT and are looking for a place to stay one night. Any suggestions of a town in Maine, NH, or VT that would be different than the places we are already staying at? Any advice would be much appreciated!

Since you posted in three forums, I responded in the NH forum.

A couple of good choices come immediately to mind....

Bethel, ME is a small town/village in the western Maine mountains with a variety of lodging choices.... The Bethel Inn is probably the best known, but other choices can be good as well -- sorry, I don't have specific recommendations because except for business functions at the Bethel Inn, Bethel's close enough to be a day trip for us.... From Bethel, which won't take more than a couple of hours from Bar Harbor, you can spend the rest of the day leaf-peeping in the Evans Notch section of the White Mountains National Forest (Rt 113 south of Rt 2 in Gilead, ME passes through a wild, mountainous section of the Forest, taking you down to Fryeburg, ME, from which you can take ME Rt 5 directly back to Bethel - a somewhat scenic ride in its own right.

Second choice would be Jackson, NH -- nice, small village north of North Conway (which can be commercial and touristy, especially during foliage season). Jackson has several Inns, B&B's etc. and some very good restaurants. For some good foliage en-route, go from Bar Harbor to Bethel, Me, then Rt 2 west to Gorham, NH and NH Rt 16 south through Pinkham Notch and part of the White Mountains National Forest.....and passing the base of the Mt Washington Auto Road en route (well worth the trip to the top if you get a good-weather day, but be forewarned, temperature differences between the base and peak of the mountain can be 30-degrees or more so dress accordingly if you go).

If you choose either Bethel or Jackson, make lodging reservations well ahead of time....both can reach the point where there are literally no vacancies anywhere in town during foliage season.

Thanks for your detailed info. We were looking at Bethel until we realized we stopped there last time, so Jackson seems different and exciting. Thanks also for the scenic driving suggestions, we will definitely make use of those.

Happy to be of help...... If you haven't already done so, check with the folks in the New Hampshire forum for more specific info on lodging choices in Jackson. Some of those folks in that forum really know the Jackson area well and should be plenty of help.
