Rhode Island beach in September › Albany

(TGA) - my hub and I would like to spend about 4 days in a beachfront hotel or inn this Sept. we have never been to R.I. so don't have any idea on which beach or area. we don't care about swimming or getting a tan--- but want a great sandy beach to walk on, maybe sit & read a book. would also like somewhere that we can easily walk into town for dinner & shopping. We did this last year in Cannon Beach Oregon ( Surf Sand Inn) and it was perfect ! Long walks every morning & our Inn did bonfires everyn night. would like to find something similar in Rhode Island.
thanks

Well, Newport comes to mind as a good spot for you and it will be great there in September. Being on a sandy beach, though, is another question altogether. The most likely choice would be the Chandler which sits right above the beginning of the Cliff Walk and Easton's Beach. Check it out online and if you are not crying when you see the rates, you will like it here!
There's lots to see and do in Newport, but you would want a car (IMHO) if staying here.
Let us know if that's out of your budget and we can post other possibilities.

I think Narragansett sounds great for you. Picturesque, natural setting, yet right on the town. Less shopping than in Npt, but the beach is nicer, and won't be so full of tourists. Most of RI's best beaches aren't really right within a town. Newport's best beach is next door- Sachuest in Middletown, a 10 minute drive. The other big beaches are along the South Coast, no real towns though, except for Westerly, which is quite exclusive. There is a brand new, redone historic hotel there called the Ocean House if you can swing it.
