Romantic Getaway › Theodore Roosevelt National Park

(TGA) - Looking to celebrate our 20th anniversary in June 2010 in North Dakota. Why is a New York couple ocming to ND? I have 6 states left to have visited all 50. Hawaii will be a separate trip; Washington, Oregon, Idaho & Alaska will be handled all in one shot in 2010 or 2011. That leaves ND.

My wife suggested a trip to ND to celebrate our 20th anniversary. So, were only limited by a few days for a romantic getaway somewhere in ND.

Any ideas?

What do you like to do? I would recommend Teddy Roosevelt National Park and the Medora area. The love story at the Chateau de Mores is romantic. You could also stay at Lake Sacajawea or Metigoshe for a vacation on the lake. Or the International Peace Gardens. Or if you guys prefer to be in town then any of our cities. It all depends on what you like to do. Also earlier in June might have a chance to be chilly (60's for highs or lots of rain), it seems to be less so if you wait until later in the month.

Thanks for your input. We have travelled to many of the countries National Parks & do enjoy them. We are not very "active", so we're not looking for extensive hiking or extreme sports type adventure. We're just as comfortable to be in the city as in the country, so either is fine; however, for this trip I think we like seclusion, with a taste of civilization.

I will look into the areas you mentioned, and await further input from others (or more from you, as well).

Thanks.

We don't hike either but there are nice drives through the park to see the elk, buffalo, etc. I think it is beautiful scenery with very vivid colors. Our large cities are Fargo, Grand Forks and Bismarck. Each has their own little attractions. I would just recommend you find a place you like and then get out there. We are known for our friendly people and I think our small towns are the best demonstration of that. Find a way to stop in a small cafe someplace along the way wherever you end up. I think all of our state is lovely, it just depends on what you like. From the flat fertile farmland in the Southeast to the badlands in the Southwest to the rugged land of the Northwest to the gentle rolling prairie of the Northwest. There are various lakes for fishing or enjoying and lots of things to do if you have an open mind on what constitutes enjoyable activity. We're a quiet board so please feel free to ask questions. Everyone is out enjoying our nice summer instead of typing away on the computer.

Thanks JA. I will keep coming back with questions as the planning continues.

I somehow got the impression that the intense silence on North Dakota boards was either due to no one living in North Dakota, no one having access to wifi or a land line, or everyone out looking for a place to eat country fried steak. I am glad you provided the real explanation, JA.

As an aside to Midtown Mike, I have purchased all the guidebooks, studied the maps, etc. etc. A suggestion out of the blue is to look at Eagle Ridge Lodge. But we have not yet been there, so I am basing this suggestion on research and not personal experience.

We would really appreciate knowing where you ended up going!

Hi Mike,

I had to laugh a little when I read your message about your 20th anniversary trip to North Dakota. My husband gave me a trip to North Dakota for our 10th anniversary! It was my last continental US state. And we took the trip this June. So I think my report may be helpful to you in your planning. We went all over the state, with the exception of the Grand Forks area.

Have you read my trip report, Alfisol's Awesome Trip to North Dakota?

I agree that the folks in North Dakota are the friendliest people I have met while on a trip. It's a beautiful state with a lot to see and do.

Ok, I have finally gotten the idea that North Dakota in its entirety is a romantic destination. We are finally headed your way toward the end of August and I will report impressions.

So long as you're with the one you love, anyplace in the US can be a romantic destination!

Alfisol,

I have read your trip report & will certainly use some of it as a guideline for my research. Thanks for pointing me to it. I'll let you know how it goes.
