(TGA) - I am planning a short vacation in January and am debating whether to go to Charleston, South Carolina or Savannah, GA. Are they usually about the same warmness that time of year? I am leaning towards Charleston because it is more well known.
Thanks-

Both cities are probably about the same weatherwise, but there is tons more to do in Charleston. You can take a day trip to Savannah or spend the night there, but the majority of your time will be best spent in Charleston.
What are your specific interests???

Mainly history, seafood restaurants, sightseeing, etc. Maybe if there is a beach somewhere I can go around either place?

Charleston has several beach communities to choose from...
Folly Beach (funky, old fashioned beach town, one Holiday Inn, mostly condos & private homes), Isle of Palms (more upscale, Wild Dunes Resort, condos & private homes), Kiawah & Seabrook (private gated communities, very green, lots of bike trail, one hotel on Kiawah "The Sanctuary", none on Seabrook, villas & private homes). All the Charleston area beaches are very nice, Kiawah has 10 miles of uninterrupted beach, very bikeable, very quiet and relaxing.
Plenty of seafood in Charleston, it's a foodie's delight. History around every corner, you can spend days doing tours, museums or your own thing.

I find Savannah more enjoyable. More low-key, less pretentious and the locals are friendly. There is history in both, get dining in both, and interesting sights in both. It is the welcome feeling I get when I am in Savannah, that I do not feel in Charleston.

We welcome everyone for sure! Charleston has received "Friendliest city" status for many years in a row so not to be concerned as both cities are friendly and hospitable.
However, January can be cold and blustery at the beach. Or - it could be 60's to 70. Regardless, the camellias will be in bloom and nature is all around - whether you're in the city or the suburbs. And it's oyster season! If you like oysters, January (late) is time for the Lowcountry Oyster Festival at Boone Hall Plantation in Mt. Pleasant (10 minutes north of Charleston). Lots and lots to do!.

Savannah is much smaller than Charleston, and may have more of a "small town" feeling. Both cities are friendly. You will find more to see and to do in Charleston.
How long is your short vacation? If you have only a weekend (2 or 3 days), Savannah would be a good choice. If you have 4 or more days, it's a good time to visit Charleston.

I think i will spend most of my time in Charleston, with a day trip or longer to Savannah. Fort Sumter sounds of interest to me in Charleston, as I am very into historic sites.
