Ski Resort recommendations › North Conway

(TGA) - First trip to New Hampshire with our friends -- seeking ski resort recommendations in NH. What's an ideal area to stay in?

We have enjoyed resorts in Maine and Vermont -- Sunday River, Stowe, Killington, Stratton, etc.

You'll want to stay in the North Conway/Jackson area. You will be in close proximity to 5 major ski areas. My favorite is Bretton Woods. Also in the area is Attitash, Black Mtn, Wildcat and Mt Cranmore. All have great skiing. I love NC because there is plenty to do beside skiing. I've been to ski towns where there is absolutely nothing to do at night. That isn't the case here. You could spend a week and never be bored. There's tons of shopping, restaurants, sleigh rides, ice skating, tubing. Have fun.

Thank you for such a prompt response! Any thoughts on Loon?

I think that the response depends on your level of skiing and how long you will be there. Recently skiied Loon for 3 days and was bored at the end of the first. It is close to a number of restaurants but nothing as comprehensive as the NC area. Last year skiied Wildcat and Attitash. Wildcat does not groom as much as the others so I found it difficult with the amount of powder. Attitash was a very good mountain especially when you cruise between peaks.

Wanted to try Bretton Woods. It advertises that it has closed 5 days for wind, well we were there for #6 so did not get out.

My gut feeling is that Loon is not a big as the Vt resorts mentioned. Attitash is probably close to Stratton but I think Stratton had more dbl blacks (when they are open) World Cup and Free Fall are a couple of my favorite runs there. Hope this helps.

In terms of size, I believe Loon is second only to Bretton Woods. BW is very much an intermediate mountain -- which if you have intermediate skiers, it's great.

Neslaw -- bored with Loon?? Did you find your way to Angel Street? Big Dipper?

This could become a conversation like "where's a good coffee shop" -- we all have our preferences. Frankly though, if you liked Sunday River, you won't find anything comparable in NH.

Well

I will give it another shot in Jan. If you are interested in sharing a beer (actually, we could each get our own), let me know

Two beers! Woodstock Inn and Brewery! (Try the Pig's Ear Ale.)

Loon is a great mountain to ski but that is about it. The sidewalks roll up at 5 o clock. I couldn't imagine spending any more than a day or two there.
