Souvenirs from Vilnius and Lithuania › Vilnius

(TGA) - Will be spending a few days in Vilnius and Lithuania; what are some unique and quintessential gifts I can bring home from Vilnius and Lithuania?

I am on the lookout for gifts that are:

+ a good value for its price

+ small and can fit into a carry-on bag

+ well-designed

+ useful or utilitarian; I prefer something that won't sit on a shelf and collect dust

+ not necessarily stereotypically Lithuania; it could be modern or contemporary in design

+ can be bought quite easily and won't require a lot of hunting or searching.

Thank you!

Now that sounds like a tough one. Why don't you drop me a line privately (if still interested) and we can discuss it there?

Some traditional Lithuanian souvenirs are various amber products or unpolished pieces of amber, ornaments of silver, bronze or copper, leather goods, clay vessels, wooden kitchen implements, linen or woollen clothes. The widest variety is to be found at fairs, where craftsmen sell their wares. At other times they can be purchased at craftsmen’s workshop-galleries in the Old Town, in the little open air market on Pilies Street or in souvenir shops.

Shops selling amber craft wares are scattered throughout the whole Old Town from Cathedral Square to Aušros Vartai (the Gate of Dawn). Those who would like to acquire more sophisticated amber creations would find it worth visiting the Amber Museum-Gallery in Šv. Mykolo (St Michael’s) Street. Nearby, at the Baltic Amber Arts Centre in Šv. Mykolo Street, you can find out more about the centuries-old Lithuanian traditions of amber craftsmanship.

Visitors to Lithuania are usually highly impressed by the local black rye bread or the wheat bread. Also popular is the pastry specialty ‘šakotis’ (layered festive cake – German Baumkuchen).

If you'll be in big shopping mall, go to "Audimas" brand sport and leisure clothing shop and buy some official team Lithuania quality items.
