(TGA) - We are a family of 4, kids 12 & 14.
We'll drive one way from St. Paul / Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA to Toronto, Ontario, Canada in the end of July.
We have about 10 days to spare.
We've been to the east and west coasts but never been to most of the states in between.
Could you please suggest a few places we could consider to visit one the way?

Who will be traveling and what are your interests. I would probably choose this itinerary based on my interests:
2 nights in Wisconsin Dells - spend a day exploring, possibly a lake excursion.
1 night in Milwaukee - see things to do
3 nights in Chicago - Visit Shedd Aquarium, Museum of Fine Arts, Sears Tower, go to a Cubs game, take the food tour
1 night in Ann Arbor - Fun college town, great restaurants and shopping.
2 nights - Detroit - take 2 days to explore the the Ford Museum. Visit the top of the Renaissance Center and Greektown. This could also be done from an Ann Arbor base.
1 night - Niagara-on-the-lake.
From Chicago, you could take an alternate route through Indianapolis (visit the racetrack and museum), Cleveland (Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, lake attractions, amusement park in Sandusky) and Buffalo/Niagara Falls.

More.... we brought our kids to Wisconsin Dells a couple years agao when they were 12 or 14 and stayed at the Great Wolf Lodge. They have an incredible indoor/outdoor waterpark and we all had a great time. It's not cheap, but it's well worth the extra $$.
In Chicago, they'll probably be more interested in the Museum of Science and Industry or the Museum of Natural HIstory than the Art Institute. Don't miss the Sears tower, though, and Wrigley field is awesome.

TTTStLou has provided some great ideas. I would like to suggest substituting Niagara on the Lake with Niagara Falls. The kids will bored to death in NotL !

I agree, lots more for the kids to do at Niagara Falls. The kids would love the Jetboat ride up the Niagara river, the Maid of the Mist boat ride, Cave of the winds walk under the falls! NOTL is more of an adult town: Shopping, restaurants,beautiful flowers, bed and breakfast hotels. Mom would love it but the kids will be bored!
