Summer in New Hampshire › North Conway

(TGA) - Hello All!

I'm from NJ and have never been to New Hampshire. My boyfriend and I love visiting new states and NH is next on our list.

We are probably looking to travel for 5-7 days, driving from NJ. We like the outdoors, cultural, food, historic things while traveling.

We have no idea where we should go in NH. What city/cities do you recommend, attractions, things to do, etc.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

The Mount Washington Valley area (North Conway, Jackson) are a great place from which to explore NH. Here is a link for things to do.

It is not all inclusive. As time get closer (or even now), check out visitnh.gov and friend them on facebook. Tons of great info.

MWV is not too far from Lake Winni or the North Country. Depending on when you time your trip, there is a great huge crafts festival at Lake Sunapee. Lots of summer stock and concerts. Many towns have band concerts on the town common.

NH should have been first on your list but you are forgiven. :)

If you do want to visit cities, there are several pleasant small ones, but Portsmouth is easily the one of greatest interest for tourists.

If driving from NJ, the Southwest corner of the state, also known as the Monadnock Region, will likely be your point of entry. It's the undiscovered part of the state and it includes:

-Mt Monadnock which is the most climbed mountain in the Western Hemisphere with 360 degree views of six states.

-Covered bridges tour

-Quaint and classic New England towns like Peterborough (the town that inspired the classic American play Our Town by Thornton Wilder), Harrisville (where it seems every building is on the Nat'l Historic Register so it really feels classic), Keene (with it's broad Main Street great for shopping), and Walpole (cute town with Burdick's Chocolate).

-Excellent arts and culture opportunities like Peterborough Players (great place to take in a live performance at the refurbished 1700s barn), Colonial Theater in Keene, Shakespeare in the Park, etc.

-Or depending on what weekend you come there are always festivals and events going on.

A great place to explore all there is to do in Monadnock can be found at www.southwestnh.com and bed and breakfast options at http://www.nhlodging.org.

This area could be used as a gateway and launching off point to exploring Portsmouth or the Lakes, White Mountains, or Dartmouth/Sunapee regions.

A small point of order, abgraham: It is very easy for anyone to see your posting history, and I notice that you have informed the good citizens of the Maine and Vermont forums, along with us NH folks, that their state is next on your list. This is hardly a crime, but it's mildly amusing.

Of course, you could easily visit all three states during your summer trip, but just be aware that you can be in no more than two of them at the same time.
