Tell me the real story, Green/Blue runs in CO? › Boulder

(TGA) - Ill be heading to Colorado in Mid december to catch up with some firends and for some skiing, most likely Beaver Creek, Vail, Copper Mtn, Monarch and Wolf Creek. What is the real story with theGreens and Blues out west?

I would consider myself a level 4 (on the 9 level system). Basically I like the greens and easy Blue's. Im more hesitant with the blues after tearing a ligament in my thumb going down a blue run, with some moguls, in Vermont. Ironically the run was called "Bunny Buster".

The only skiing out west I did was at Las Vegas Ski/Snowboard resort. I mainly stuck to a couple runs I knew I could do, in fear of a repeat Vermont performance, and the conditions were not the best (late March).

Are the blues out west equal to blacks in the East? So, should I strictly stick to the Greens? Do most resorts have Green,Double Green,Blue, Double Blue, rating system? Thanks for any help =)

It varies from mountain to mountain. A green run at Keystone might well be a blue run at Breckenridge. Most people say that skiing out west is easier than skiing in the east because conditions are better, the snow is softer.

Of the ones you mentioned I think you'd like Copper the best. Maybe go there first and get your ski legs under you.

I agree, Copper Mtn would be great for greens and blues. The mountain is set up with easy runs on the right and hardest on the left. Also Beaver Creek has some nice easier runs as well. Check out the lift maps for each resort to plan your visit. You may also want to take a lesson one day to get more comfortable with western snow!

Have fun.

I've done "some" skiing out east, and if you like the Green's and Easy Blue's there you'll enjoy the same in Colorado - the biggest difference is usually quality of snow and length of runs. You asked about how resorts rate their slopes - this is the classification Vail Resorts (Vail, Beaver Creek, Keystone, Breckenridge) uses - note there is no "double" green or blue, only double blacks:

Green:

The easiest pistes at a mountain. Green Circle trails are generally wide and groomed

Blue:

Intermediate difficulty slopes that are usually groomed

Black:

Amongst the most difficult at a given mountain. Black Diamond trails tend to be steep and may or may not be groomed

Double Black Diamond:

These trails are for experts only due to exceptionally steep slopes and other hazards such as narrow trails, exposure to wind, and the presence of obstacles such as steep drop-offs or trees.

I am a green and some blue skier- and I have skied many times in the east and many times in the west. Greens and blues overall are the same level of difficulty on both sides. In the west they are just A LOT longer which is awesome! One thing that must be said is that skiing in the west is MUCH easier than the east. I felt like I skipped a level or 2 when I skied in Colorado. It was AMAZING. It's MUCH easier. I found myself being able to ski blues with relative ease in Colorado when I was very very hesitant to do so in the east. You'll love Colorado!
