(TGA) - The Best of the Republic of Macedonia?

I am both looking for, and providing information about Macedonia. Please read the growing list below (compiled through personal research done on the internet). Please add, or edit items to list as you see fit. If you live in Macedonia, or consider yourself an expert on the country then please contribute your tips, hints, and favourites based on the criteria listed below. Once complete, this list should help visitors find exactly "the very best in Macedonia".

CRITERIA for LIST:

-memorable/dramatic scenery & landscape photography. Where to find the best (viewpoints, vistas, city views, panoramas, skylines, sunsets, etc..)?

-the unique outdoors, hikes/hilltops/lookouts, and amazing views?

-lovely/charming streets, cute villages, hidden nooks/places, and magnificent/attractive architecture?

-authentic/unforgettable "local" travel experiences (i.e. non-typical, interesting/special experiences (full of original character), and unique only to the local area).

-the best freebies (museums, galleries excluded)

-specialty/unique regional cuisine/gastronomy (or the BEST places to eat (w/ local's prices, food made with love/regional favorites, and not too many tourists eating there)),

-anything else off-the beaten path.

Yes .. T-Mobile is the cheepest, 070, 071,072...

Matka in Saraj, just out of Skopje.. is one of Macedonia's and worlds fine representations of the deep mysterious beauties of natures creations... Its only good during spring and summer... After you push through the cars at the entrance and pass the restaurants, you mount the canyon from its right side... there is a beaten path that goes about 2-3 km deep into the canyon. The color of the water is amazingly green-just overwhelming. Swimming is much easier out of the canyon but not so pleasant due to the crowd, cars and kids... However once you enter the canyon, the deeper in you go the more beautiful swimming gets. Water is very cold, but hot summer days allow you to enjoy for a while. End of august is already too cold for swimming. You break the beaten path, to go down to the water anywhere you may see fit for yourself.. there is no beach type of thing,.. you just settle around trees on the dirt or grass and youre on 5-6 m depth of water.. very very clean... untouched nature.

Skopje has one very old neighbourhood...wher rarely you see tourists.. I dont know why... Its a neighbourhood that is traditional for old settlers of Skopje... the name of the neighbourhood is Debar Maalo. its right off the center of the city... lots of trees around, old-restored houses.. FULL of old town , traditional type of rustic restaurants. Very good food.. everything is fresh... they are all small and very intimate with very decent prices: Idadija, Papu, Gurmet, DM, Nostalgija.. a new one pops up every now and then... You find here lots of nice faces, young and older people.. good for families as well.
