Travel from NJ by Train › New York City

(TGA) - My wife and and I want to travel to NYC for a weekend. We live in Philadelphia and want to drive to New Jersey, leave the car in NJ for the weekend and take a train into NYC for the weekend.
Where is a good train station to do this from in NJ. Somewhere that we can leave our car parked for the entire weekend and not worry about theft, etc?
Thanks

NJ Transits MetroPark station in Iselin NJ is exactly what you have described.
It is where I used to park my car before I felt comfortable driving in Manhattan. The garage is staffed 24 hours a day and it is very reasonably priced. Frequent train service from MetroPark to New York Penn on NJ Transit.

Why not take the train all the way? Or the very cheap bus service. Save the car hassles.

Thanks!!
That looks like a nice neighborhood!! You can see it using google maps and street view.

"Why not take the train all the way?"
That's also a thought and I live walking distance to a station. Only problem is that it will take me at least 40-50 minutes to just get to 30th st. in Philly.

I too will encourage you to consider the idea of ditching the car. You could:
* take SEPTA to Trenton and then a NJ Transit train into NYC's Penn Station (7th Ave & 34th St, across from the flagship Macy's store at Herald Square);
* Amtrak is the fastest way to come and here's a special offer you can use -- be sure to click onto the Book It Now button on this page or you won't get the discount:

But depending on your dates of travel, you may see more of a savings with this (does require 2-weeks advance purchase; the preceding deal can be had on as little as 3 days notice, although Amtrak prices rise as the date of travel draws nearer):

* Lastly, you can travel via Bolt (also serves the Cherry Hill Mall) or Megabus for as little as $1 each way.

Even if you have to pay the top fare of $14/person each way, $56 compares favorably to the the combined costs of round-trip gas and tolls + parking. And you can sit back, relax and really enjoy each other's company :-)

Agree that driving to Metropark is easy, although some of the other alternatives mentioned above are probably better.
If you do drive to Metropark, it's easy to find the garage from the Garden State Parkway exit. Be aware, though, that it's less easy to find the Garden State for your return trip. I did this a few months ago and assumed that I'd just ask at the garage exit booth how to get back on the highway. Wrong! Their system is entirely automated, so no humans at the exit -- and no signs for the highway either. I guessed that I should turn left, and that wasn't correct. I got stuck in quite a traffic jam before I got back to the highway entrance. So, bottom line, I'd plan my return route to the highway!

I've always driven to Metropark from exit 131A of the northbound Garden State Parkway. And then simply retraced my steps, so to speak, upon leaving. I.e., make a right from Metropark, turn left at the next corner [there's a traffic light] onto S. Wood Ave. a/k/a County Rd. 649, and follow that through the corporate park-like complex -- past Siemen's corporate quarters on your right and the Hilton Woodbridge on your left.
Very shortly after Hilton's driveway, the road splits, but there are signs -- albeit not huge honking ones -- to direct you back to the NJ Turnpike/southbound GSP or the northbound GSP. From Metropark to the split is maybe half a mile.
