Trip Report - Road Trip through Nebraska › Omaha

(TGA) - I recently returned from a road trip from Colorado to Minnesota and back with my mom and daughter. On our way out to MN, we traveled through NE, so I'll share our experiences in NE.

We made our first stop in Ogallala off I-80 for gas and a picnic lunch. There is a great little park on the north side of town between West B Street and West C Street starting at West 8th Street. It is called North Park. It has picnic tables and playground equipment. I have a 2-year-old, so this was a perfect place to let her run around and play before getting back in the car for several more hours. This was a great option instead of stopping at a standard rest stop, and it was only about 1 mile off the highway.

We stopped for the night in Grand Island. We stayed at the Sleep Inn on N. Diers off of Hwy 281 across from the Conestoga Mall. Hwy 281 is a main drag through town, so there were a lot of restaurant options and other amenities. The room at the Sleep Inn was simple, but adequate. Very good rate (less than $70). My daughter enjoyed the pool. They offer a small continental breakfast (waffles, muffins, yogurt, juices, coffee, etc.) which was convenient. We ate at Applebee's the night we arrived which was the standard for all Applebee's. The place was very busy on a Thursday night which was surprising, but we only waited a couple minutes for a table. Food was good as was the service.

We did not make any more stops in Nebraska on our way toward Sioux Falls, SD. It is only about 4 1/2 hours to get there. We took Hwy 30 out of Grand Island, then Hwy 81 at Columbus straight north. Nice easy drive.

Thank you for taking the time to write a trip report. When you gave specifics it made it even more valuable for future travelers. We are glad you had a nice trip.

Is there any particular reason you avoided I-80 to Sioux Falls?

Just a guess. The route they took was the most direct route to Sioux Falls. I-80 does not go to Sioux Falls. It would be out of the way.
