Where to go for a week in the South? › Coastal South Carolina › Charleston

(TGA) - My husband and I in our 60's have never been to South Carolina or Georgia. We are planning to go for a week in November to see places with beautiful sights, mansions, etc. Any suggestions? We are open but so far have come up with Charleston, SC and Savannah, Ga. Thanks.

Charleston definitely has what you're looking for, even more so than Savannah, altho that's very nice also.

Beaches, plantations, historic homes and buildings, carriage rides, Rainbow Row, The Battery, The Market, fabulous restaurants, the Yorktown, Shem Creek shrimpboats, sweetgrass baskets, shrimp and grits, Angel Oak, Sweet Tea Vodka - Firefly Distilleries, museums, art galleries, Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, St. Michael's & St. Philip's churches, water taxi to Patriot's Point....

Need I say more?

You will love Charleston. From Charleston, you can easily take a day trip to Savannah. A week will seem too short!

Charleston is a gorgeous city! Its my new favorite place to visit! :o)

Also, keep in mind there are a lot of great little islands all around the low country to check out. We did a two week trip last year: started in Charleston, drove down to Savannah, stayed out on Tybee Island, then drove further into GA and stayed on Jekyll Island, then came back up to SC and finished off our trip in Myrtle Beach. It was the best vacation I've had!

The history in Charleston and Savannah is just awesome! Visit a plantation, do a harbor tour and a carriage ride (to name a few things)

Tybee Island is a fun little laid-back place for some sun and sand and a few cute shops. Spanky's and Fannie's on the beach were two great places we ate.

Jekyll Island is wonderful - visit the driftwood beach at sunset and the GA turtle center (you can do hatchling/nest excavation walks on the beach that are really interesting!).

I agree. You'll love Charleston! I recommend a carriage ride as a great way to see the city. The guides are very entertaining and teach you a lot about the City's history in a fun way. The plantations are a bit outside the city. There are several to choose from but my favorite is Middleton Place. The mansion unfortunately burned to the ground so only the ruins remain, but the grounds are spectacular - the view of the Ashley River over the butterfly lakes is extraordinarily beautiful. There's also a nice place to have a real, Lowcounty lunch at Middleton Place.

The acquarium is also worth checking out in Charleston. It's not especially big, but it is very nice and you can see the Loggerhead Sea Turtles that are renown in the area. There is also a schooner, called the Schooner Pride, in the harbor you can take a short day sail on. It leaves from a pier just next to the Acquarium.

There are a number of world-class restaurants in Charleston. High Cotton, S.N.O.B (Slightly North of Broad), and Magnolia's are classic, upscale Lowcountry cuisine. For casual, but good seafood (ie: fried shrimp in a basket), try Fleet Landing. It's right on the water and so the views are great. One of my favorite spots is Rue de Jean, a wonderful french restaurant.

Enjoy your trip!

Try Myrtle Beach.Has something for everyone.Restaurants, golf, mini golf, theaters, night clubs, gardens and I could go on and on.The section between 52nd and 79th in the northern section of Myrtle is very quiet and beautiful. The hotels offer great ammenities like indoor and outdoor pools and lazy rivers. Check out some web sites.

Both Charleston and Savannah are worth a visit and the route in between is historic and gorgeous. Just mind your speed, I'm not kidding, lol! Make sure you sign up for a walking our carriage tour in each place to maximize your visit. Figure out an itenerary and we can help you adjust it as well.

Look over the restaurant reviews on this site, pick some you like, and we can weigh in on our own favorites.

I too will cast a vote for Charleston and the surrounding area...you might consider spending part of your time in Charleston, staying in the Historic District, then spend a few days on one of the local islands (Folly Beach, Isle of Palms, Kiawah or Seabrook).

Venturing out to KI or SB will give you a little taste of the more rural side of the Lowcountry, while at the same time enjoying beautiful accomodations and beautiful beaches.
