Where to stop in Luxembourg › Luxembourg City

(TGA) - We will be driving from Calais through Luxembourg onto Switzerland next May. How easy it is to get a hotel in Luxembourg, should we book in advance or will we be able to find places along the way?

Thanks for your reply, we'll be passing through from Calais before travelling onto Lake Como next May. We'll be stopping one night & ideally we'd like to stay in Luxembourg city, if its not going to be too much of a detour. Are we likely to find many hotels or are we better booking in advance?

Hello again,

I am now using a full size keyboard............much better.

I live in Luxembourg so not really sure about how easy it is to get a room on spec.

However Luxembourg is a major tourist City and is also a huge Banking and Financial centre so I would assume pre booking a room would make sense.

The City has two centres about 1 to 2 k apart.

The Station area, which has many Hotels and the shopping is like Oxford Street London.

Or the main centre close to the Place D'armes and the Palace which has a number of Hotels and the shops are like Kensington and knightsbridge.

If I had the choice I would stay close to the latter.

If the Hotel does not have parking there are many secure parking places.

Why not call the tourist office (they will speak English)

They are very close to the Centre and they should be very happy to help.

There are also many Hotels on the outskirts of the City but then you have to travel in and that may take time out of your schedule.

If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask me.

Thank you for the information, if we were to book somewhere outside the city how easy is it to find parking or would we be better using public transport to get in?

If your hotel is on a Bus route in to the city then use the Bus. They do (normally) come at the time they say on the timetable. You pay the driver/conductor. If you have or are given a ticket you normally have to cancel it in a machine on the bus. There are two central bus stations. One next to the railway station and the other near the main Post Office in the upper centre. With plenty of bus lanes travel is quite swift.

Except on special holidays there is normally enough parking available for visitors to the city. There are electronic signs telling you how many spaces available in each as you arrive in the centre.

Finally check the location of the Hotel on Google maps. Some Hotels call themselves Luxembourg central or centre when they are absolutely not. For example Ibis Sud was called central before complaints.

Ryan Air did not invent the idea of kidding the traveller.

Sounds like the buses are better than the ones in England then!

Hotels in the city seem either expensive or you have to pay upfront and are unable to cancel them, if we were to stay at the airport how easy would that be to get in?

Thanks for the tip about hotels... whilst Ryanair may not have invented the idea of kidding the traveller, but they have certainly mastered it.

The city is about 10 to 15 minutes by car from the Airport. Normal rules about peak times apply.
